Derrick's passion is helping artists, athletes, and creators achieve and protect their dreams through his business law practice. His lifelong interest in sports, entertainment, and business stems from playing baseball as a child, and his extensive and continuing experience as a drummer and percussionist with various award-winning bands and orchestras.

Eventually, Derrick's interest in the business of sports and entertainment led him to pursue his law degree as a Presidential Merit Scholar at Stetson University College of Law, where he received his J.D. cum laude in 2012. While at Stetson, Derrick had the opportunity to intern at Minor League Baseball's St. Petersburg headquarters, and as a Certified Legal Intern with the Clearwater, FL City Attorney. Derrick further completed his MBA in Sport Business and MS in Sport and Entertainment management at the University of South Florida, spending the 2013-14 NHL season in residency with the legal department of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Post-law school, Derrick was the Executive Vice-President, General Counsel, and COO of a major cosmetics manufacturing company in the Tampa Bay area.
In his spare time, Derrick is a published author of articles and short fiction, and has served on the board of the St. Petersburg Shakespeare Festival, with which he also occasionally performs.
